Project/Unit description/Expedition: The alien Tosalba is wondering why people on earth have so many things that are unique to them. “Artifacts” is what these humans call them, which are “an object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.” They are found by archeologists who dig them up very carefully. As an artist what would your personal artifact be to show Tosalba who you are as a person?
Essential Understanding: Given clay material, students will be able to create a cultural artifact to show who they are.
Inquiry/Learning target: Students will understand how artifacts can represent a person or culture.
Key Concept(s):
Art Focus: Students will explore wet clay and forming shapes for their artifacts. Students will plan in their sketchbook their personal artifact before they explore with clay.
Literacy Focus: Vocabulary: three-dimensional, artifacts, archeology, culture,
Literacy Integration: Verbalization of process.
Documentation: Below are images of student's process and work

This student decided to represent an important artifact by rendering a clay model of his stuffed teddy bear. Through memory and exploration of material, the student effectively created a time in his life. Enhancing motor skills through manipulation of material the student was successful in creating a "bed" for his bear to lay on, effectively using oral skills to communicate his intent.

Day two: Painting Their Artifact
After a short powerpoint presentation about primary colors and what new colors they created, students were able to paint their fired cultural artifacts. There was also a station of hot glue guns, incase students wanted to glue pieces back together if their artifact didn't make the kiln firing.
Based on the lecture students were given, this student remembered that mixing primary colors created secondary colors. Through reasoning and color and material exploration, this student concluded that pink was the color she wanted to use. She created this color by mixing two different colors to create what she wanted. Using her paintbrush, the student exercised motor skills. |
This student is painting their turtle shell "brown", "just brown" is what they said. They were able to create this by mixing yellow, red and blue. They also said that by mixing blue and yellow they were going to make green! Which shows comprehension of color mixing and expression through color. This student analyzed realistic colors to that of a real life turtle. |
