Project/Unit description/Expedition: It’s Tosalba again and she is wondering why people do things for strange reasons, and only at certain times of the year. To help explain you will create a celebration of your own. What will people do during your celebration? Wear funny hats, coats, or will they walk backwards and wear odd glasses? What will people eat during your celebration like turkey, boiled eggs, bananas, or birds?
Essential Understanding: Through the creative process, artists have a better understanding of their cultures as they express who they are.
Inquiry/Learning target:Using drawing materials, SWBAT create a story of their unique celebrations.

This students' celebration was Black Charizard day which is a Pokémon.
On the left picture he created the background by remembering what a sky looked like and applying it to his artwork. On the right picture, he created the main character to his Celebration. There is a division between sky and ground he methodically applied. He developed his perspective on creating his creature; through brainstorming, compare and contrast of a real life animal, he was able to depict what a Charizard looked similar to and succeeded to transfer his thoughts to paper. |
This students' day is "Happy Day" where everyone is happy! She filled the whole page with this smiling face and showed teeth because when you're happy and smiling your teeth tend to show. It's very minimal with color, with an emphasis on the mouth. This student justifies why she made up this celebration, connecting it to real life experiences and how she felt that day.
Day two!
Students were able to create artifacts for their made-up celebrations! Taking the 2-D to 3-D with found objects and an open imagination.
The student depicts motion, although in a simple form, by drawing lines under and above the larger figure's arm. He intents to depict what the body looks like after the large figure eats him, emphasizing with red what blood looks like, as well as crossing out the eyes with "X" to show the figure is not living. |

Through problem solving and engineering, the students was able to reinforce the sides of his trampoline by tightening and twirling the pipe cleaner accordingly. He is hesitant at fist as you can hear him ask the teacher if she could help him, but in the end analyzes the issue and manages to work through it by himself. |
The student was able to create a pumpkin like figure by wrapping orange pipe cleaners around sparkly green pipe cleaners that looked like vines. In the video you can see her cut out a shape which was then used as a dress for her pumpkin. Simple motor- skills are being defined and developed as well as using color to express intent. |

This student used a variety of materials to create her trampoline. She stuck the pipe cleaners through the soft foam paper to make the trampoline part and help it stand up. She clearly remembers and know what color a trampoline is, but she decided to just do random colors for the feet. She was creating the "net" part of a trampoline by attaching yellow panels of foam paper around it. |
Day Three!
This day students created collages based off the celebrations students will illustrate their stories using only paper, glue and scissors. All students were given a single piece of large paper to start on.

Project/Unit description/Expedition:
During today's class we showed students work by Eric Carle. The author of the Very Very Hungry Caterpillar, and how he used collage as a means of creating his book characters.
Essential Understanding:
Inquiry/Learning target: Based on the artist powerpoint, SWBAT identify techniques to collage about their celebrations

This student made the pumpkin from her day. The little 'booklet' she made was to explain the pumpkin creature. She also at one time tried to make a house for her creature. She explained that her pumpkin was the reason for her celebration.
This student created Matilda again from her Book Day celebration and here she is in the library. The student is depicting a scene from the book in her collage. Although very simple imagery, the student recollects from memories what a book shelve looks like and emphasizes the characters identity by spelling her name on top of her head.
This student was depicting people dressing up in animal costumes for her dress-up day. Here she has some people as a Tiger and a Dalmatian. The shapes and colors of the materials reminded the student of different animals she had seen before, thus inspiring her to dress her people in their respectable animal skins.
This student was continuing his Pokemon day and here he is showing a trainer and a Pikachu. Through explanation and memory, the student was able to tell what his characters were doing. The student realized a common theme in his art making and continued to create a story through his art making.
By using tools and materials, the students was able to identify shapes to create a cat. Noting significant similarities and differences between realistic cats and cartoons, this student is able to develop her perspective on this figure. She is also exercising basic motor skills and building shape and color relationships.
